2023 First Annual Writing Contest

Eligibility & Requirements
 

This international writing contest allows for students from anywhere in the world, who are currently in grades 6-11 to be eligible to register for this contest.

SUBMISSION Deadline on February 25, 2023.

WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT on March 25, 2023.​

Section I | Juniors | Grades 6-8: Word Count = 350-500 words.

Section II | Seniors | Grades 9-11: Word Count = 500-1000 words.

Themes & Topics:

  1. Any environmentally-related topics

  2. Climate Fiction (Cli-Fi)

Exemplar Prompts:

 

1. "If you really think that the environment is less important than the economy, try holding your breath while you count your money." - Guy McPherson. How would you choose between economy and environment?

 

2. Where did the concept of "Environmental Justice" come from? What are some of the causes and effects of environmental injustices?

 

3. Who's more responsible for the environmental crisis, corporation or individual?

Prizes & Awards

Section I | Junior | Grades 6-8:

Winner: $100 CAD

Runner-Up: $75 CAD

Honourable Mention: $50 CAD

Section II | Senior | Grades 9-11:

Winner: $200 CAD

Runner-Up: $100 CAD

Honourable Mention: $55 CAD

We are partnering with The Starfish Canada and The Metaphysical Review.

All participants will have their articles published on our website, and all 6 final nominees from both sections will have their articles published in The Starfish Canada's Journal.

OUR JUDGES

Our team consists of 5 qualified and experienced judges coming from Canada and the US. Among them are an award-winning American novelist, a private school teacher, and members of the editorial leadership team from the Starfish Canada's environmental journal!
